Earthquake shakes region
QUAKE - 30 reported killed; damage in millionsA killer quake that struck the Los Angeles metropolitan area at 5:59 a.m. today apparently hit the hardest in the North Valley area where loss of life and property damage is staggering.
Hospitals - especially the Olive View and San Fernando Veterans Administrations facilities - were scenes of death and destruction.
Supervisor Warren M. Dorn visited the Olive View Hospital and described the new $28,000,000 facility as a "total wreck."
The death toll throughout Los Angeles had reached 30 by 5 p.m. today, and much of this total is in the San Fernando Valley.
Adding to the grim toll is the announcement that workers at VA Hospital fear that approximately 40 persons believed trapped in rubble will not be rescued alive.
Eight hundred sixty-two people have been reported injured.
A reporter for The News was at the VA Hospital and said he counted seven dead, and rescue teams were still probing the ruins.
