Hoopla to spawn cage superstars
MANILA, Philippines — The next PBA superstar may just come from your barangay.
A regional talent search basketball competition with the aim of promoting active lifestyle especially among the youth has been conquering the streets of major barangays in the National Capital Region since last month, and this could just be a venue for millions of basketball-crazy Filipinos to be discovered and realize their dreams of becoming a pro dribbler.
Now on its second year, the Coca-Cola Hoopla-NCR Championship has drawn 65 barangays and promising cagers since April, although only five squads has survived heading into the homestretch of the event that dangles a P250,000 prize for the champion.
Project head JB Baylon sees the 21-city competition as a gateway for players, especially non-varsity talents, coaches, fans and local government units to interact in an atmosphere of fun and competition.
“With Coca-Cola Hoopla, we achieved two important objectives: encourage an active lifestyle, especially among our youth, and contribute to the development of Filipino basketball talent at the grassroots level. And for the fans, we offer the enjoyment of seeing basketball played for the love of the sport,” said Baylon, the PBA Powerade Tigers governor and director for Public Affairs and Communications of Coca-Cola Export Corp.
Photos she took at the scene showed the spotted animal being held in a cage in the back of a van with its injured paw held off the ground. Cheetahs are the fastest land animals and once lived across wide areas of Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
